Building the Future: Everton Stadium’s Sustainable Success Story and Exclusive Hospitality Packages
Topping Out Ceremony
Everton Football Club along with Laing O’Rourke held a “topping out” ceremony at the new Everton Stadium to commemorate the completion of the structure, firmly reiterating their commitment to keeping the project on schedule as well as Everton’s sustainable success story. The construction of the new 52,888 capacity venue started on 26th July 2021 with and remarkably, all four stands have already been erected to their full height, with the final sections of steelwork and terracing units installed atop the east stand, where the topping out ceremony took place.
Everton’s Chief Stadium Development Officer, Colin Chong, expressed his pride in the project, ” The project has had to overcome many hurdles, but what can’t ever be questioned is its importance to the future of Everton Football Club and, more dramatically, its importance to the economy and the people of the Liverpool City Region. That is why we should all take immense pride in ‘topping out’ while the project remains firmly on track.”
Ongoing Construction
Work is currently underway at Everton Stadium to complete the roofing structure on the west and east stands, while the initial fit-out has commenced on multiple levels of the two main stands. The expected completion date for Everton Stadium is the 2024-2025 season, although recent reports have raised concerns about a potential delay.
The latest published drone footage as well as analysis by stadium construction experts has raised concerns that the project may be at least three months behind schedule.
Project Director at Laing O’Rourke, Gareth Jacques discussed the incredible progress of the project “With the support of our designers, supply chain partners, and office colleagues, what everyone can see today is what has been achieved in 90 weeks. That is phenomenal. What we do isn’t easy, and we have some of the best people in the industry, and some of the engineering we adopt at Laing O’Rourke is very cutting-edge. What you see is a result of doing some really difficult sub-structure work through the winter months, when there was rain, hail, it was very windy and not pleasant at all. To do all that and keep slightly ahead of schedule is impressive, and I am incredibly proud of everyone involved. I genuinely believe that what the team are delivering is going to be a fantastic stadium, which the fans will love.”
The Future of the Stadium
Everton’s new stadium was recently included in a 10 venue shortlist, proposed by the UK and Ireland’s final bid to host UEFA Euro 2028. However, the financial aspect of the project has also come under scrutiny, as Everton posted a loss of £44.7 million for the 21/22 season, despite generating £181 million turnover. The infilling of Bramley-Moore Dock as well as the above-ground construction on all four sides of the stadium were said to be key factors in the club’s losses.
The club have confirmed that they are in advanced talks to secure the next stage of funding for the stadium development. The funding is expected to be signed off in the coming months which further demonstrates Everton’s commitment to the successful completion of their new stadium.
Features of the New Stadium
Hospitality
‘ALL’ is the name for the hospitality experience at Everton’s new stadium. This will bring together the bars, restaurants and experiences that will be available at Everton Stadium. It is designed to be able to offer something to everyone, such as dining in a restaurant or a more informal bar experience. These experiences will include fine dining, casual restaurants and contemporary lounge bars which will be alongside prime located seats to enjoy the match.
Everton Way
Everton is giving their fans a chance to be part of the new stadium by purchasing a stone that will be individually placed along a unique walkway called Everton Way, outside of the new ground. Fans will be able to purchase various sizes, designs and locations of stones and write short messages on them to commemorate a special date, birthday, or as tributes to family and friends. Fans will also get the chance to have their stones placed next to a club legend, or within the Prince Rupert’s Tower.
Sustainability
Everton’s new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, costing more than £500m, is set to be one of the most sustainable in the Premier League. The team in charge of the development of the stadium have focused on sustainability from the design and pre-construction phase of the project. Modern construction methods have been employed, with elements of the build being manufactured off-site at Laing O’Rourke’s factories based in Nottinghamshire and the West Midlands, reducing waste, water usage, energy consumption, and carbon emissions. The sand used to infill the dock area was transported by boat, preventing unnecessary truck journeys and allowing for greater quality control.
Laing O’Rourke set an ambitious target of reusing 95% of all materials used on-site. So far, 100% of steel and glass from demolished buildings have been recycled, and remaining concrete and bricks are crushed and reused as piling mat and backfill. Sustainable transport measures are also being used, including upgrading facilities at nearby Sandhills train station, and installing electric vehicle charging points at the stadium. The club have also set up an Everton for Change group in collaboration with the Everton Fans’ Forum, to promote green initiatives to fellow fans, including Green Matchday.
Overall, Everton’s sustainable success story is a perfect example of how stadiums can be constructed without damaging the environment. From the reuse of vital materials to using different transport techniques, Everton’s development team have strived to make the stadium a sustainable success.
